Dev Anand - A Star Still Shining In Indian Movie Industry

Fondly known as the evergreen actor of Indian film industry, Dev Anand is one talented actor who stole the hearts of many. Not just was he the king in the field of acting, but he was also film producer and director. A native of Gurdaspur, he has 2 famous filmmakers Vijay Anand and Chetan Anand as his siblings. Sheel Kanta Kapur, mother of internationally acclaimed film maker Shekhar Kapur, is his sibling.

For his noteworthy contribution to Indian cinema, love and dedication shown to it, he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan by Government of India. He worked at the military office before he entered the world of films. His debut film was Hum Ek Hain. But, Ziddi was the 1st movie, which was successful at the box office. He was paired with Kamini Kaushal in this movie, which was a hit. When this film became successful, Dev Anand became a producer in 1949 and founded his production house, Navketan.

He chose Guru Dutt as the director of his film Baazi and the movie succeeded commercially proving his decision to be correct. Taxi Driver, , which hit the theatres in 1952, was a major hit. He wedded Kalpana Kartik, with whom he acted in this film.

His special way of saying the dialogue, while constantly shaking his head, became a favorite with his followers. His acting career continued to flourish during the '50s with movies like Kala Pani and Insaniyat. For the performance in Kala Pani, Dev Anand was awarded the trophy for Best Actor. Six films among others, in which he worked with Suraiya, were commercially successful.

His first movie in color was Guide, in which he played a role opposite Waheeda Rehman. The story of this movie is an adaptation of a novel penned by R K Narayan, popular writer. This film sees a great performance of Dev Anand, which moves through various emotions like humor, romance, greed and finally salvation.

He reunited with Vijay Anand to produce Jewel Thief, which consisted of the charming, talented and sensuous actresses like Tanuja, Vyjanthimala, Faryal, Helen and Anju Mahendru, who reined the industry. Their second collaborative venture, Johnny Mera Naam, was also a great success. Hare Rama Hare Krishna, which saw Zeenat Aman, a sensational actress, was his first movie as a director. Tina Munim was another actress who was also introduced by Dev Anand.
